eco friendly banner printing

SAFEGUARDING FUTURE GENERATIONS

One of the greatest threats to our planet is plastic waste. Common examples include the PET in your plastic bottles and the LDPE in your plastic bags. What most people don’t realise is that when it comes to Banner Printing, PVC is one of the worst offenders for polluting the planet. PVC contaminates humans and the environment throughout its lifecycle during its production, use and especially its disposal.

Since safer alternatives are available for virtually all uses of PVC, it is possible to protect human health and the environment by replacing and eventually phasing out PVC Banners, a vision and future that we at 5 Studio UK are committed to.

DITCH THE PVC

Our PVC FREE Banners have the look, feel and quality of their PVC equivalents; However, unlike their PVC counterparts, our eco-friendly banners can be safely disposed of using incineration or waste-to-energy schemes, as the emissions of Hydrogen Chloride (HCL), toxic dioxins and furans, are 100’s of times lower than PVC Banner waste, well below the minimum safety levels issued by EU Guidelines.

In fact, incinerating just one roll of our PVC Free Banner materials can generate enough energy to power an iPhone for over 5 years. In addition to that, PVC Free Banners weigh significantly less, reducing carbon emissions associated with transport.

Environmental impact score

Trying to navigate the plethora of eco friendly banner printing materials popping up in the market can feel like an impossible task. In reality, depending on how the manufacturer wants to spin it, a lot of the marketing information you read about each material can amount to greenwashing; They focus on one aspect of the product while ignoring other critical factors.

However, at 5 Studio UK, our range of eco friendly banner printing materials have been evaluated for their environmental impact, from its composition and transportation, right through to its end-of-life disposal and recyclability. Each material is then given a score, allowing you, the consumer, to make an informed decision on your purchases.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

We can finish banners to suit your specific requirements. Our range of finishing options include:

Trimmed to Size with Eyelets

This finishing option is only suited to our 450gsm Tear Resistant PVC Banners, thanks to its unbeatable tear and tensile strength.

Hemmed Edge and Eyeletted

A hemmed edge strengthens your banner, making it less likely to tear along the edges. This finishing option is our recommended option for all of the banners we produce, except our 450gsm Tear Resistant Banner, which benefits from an already unrivalled tear and tensile strength.

We offer two types of hemmed edge. Standard or Reinforced. We advise choosing a Standard Hemmed Edge for banners less than 3m x 2m, and a Reinforced Hemmed Edge for larger banners or those in exposed locations. A reinforced hem involves welding a nylon webbing, similar to seatbelt material to the edges of the banner.

Pole Pockets

If you intend to suspend your banner, for example, from a ceiling, we recommend Pole Pockets.  A pole pocket is when the banner is folded over on itself, sewn and/or welded to create a pocket that’s open on one or both ends. The purpose of a pole pocket is so that the banner can slide over a cable, wooden dowel, or scaffolding tube.

Eyelets are metal rings, approximately 11-12mm in diameter, inserted along the edges and corners of a banner and designed to make it easier to hang banners. If you simply punched a hole in your banner, it would most likely tear it when it’s hung. Eyelets are designed to reinforce the hole and when done right, allow for hanging outdoor banners without tearing.

As standard, eyelets are positioned approximately every 500mm on all four sides If you require custom eyelet positioning, please supply eyelet markers on your artwork.

Whilst this is relatively straightforward, it’s important that this is done correctly to ensure your outdoor banners are secure, able to withstand the elements and most importantly, visible.

We’ve broken this down in our blog – ‘How do I hang Banner Outdoor’  as well as the accessories required/used.

Our PVC Free banners are not made from recycled materials, however, they are 100% recyclable.

PVC Banners

Unfortunately, PVC Banners are not widely recyclable. According to Statista, of the 29.1 million tonnes of plastic waste produced in the EU, ONLY 4.72 million tonnes is recycled in the EU. Why? PVC is a category 3 plastic, which means it is only recyclable at specialist facilities. Without substantial government or private sector subsidies, the recycling process is not currently financially viable or accessible to the general population.

The majority of the PVC waste that isn’t recycled inevitably ends up in Landfill or is Incinerated, releasing hazardous pollutants into the environment that build up in the water, air and food chain. While all plastics pose serious threats to human health and the environment, few consumers realise that PVC is the single most environmentally damaging of all plastics.

You can read more or why in our blog post.

PVC FREE BANNERS

Our Eco-friendly, PVC Free Banners are designed for responsible end of life disposal. Whilst they cannot be recycled through a residual waste stream, there are dedicated recycling programs widely available. If you’d like more information on how you can recycle a PVC Free Banner, contact us today and we’ll arrange this for you.

Our eco-friendly banners can also be safely incinerated without any harmful effects to health or the environment. Any emissions are hundreds of times lower than that of PVC banner and well below the minimum safety levels issued by EU guidelines. In-fact, incinerating just one roll of our PVC free banner material can generate enough energy to power an iPhone for over 5 years.

Biodegradable Banners

Made from 100% natural fibres, our Biodegradable, PVC FREE Banners can be discarded via residual waste streams. Once in landfill, this banner material will decompose within 9-12 months. Truly revolutionary!

Both Air Mesh and Mesh PVC are designed and suitable for use outdoors in wind exposed applications. The main differences between the two products are:

  1. Air Mesh is constructed from Polyester rather than environmentally damaging PVC.
  2. As a material, polyester is significantly lighter and has a premium look and feel vs the ‘plastic’ PVC Mesh equivalent.
  3. Air Mesh Polyester is 100% recyclable, whereas Mesh PVC is not easily recyclable, requiring specialist facilities which are far and few between.
